Jeff Gaffney obtained his B.S., M.S., and doctorate in Chemistry from the University of California, Riverside. His thesis advisor was Dr. James N. Pitts, Jr., a well known photochemist. He is very active in the American Meteorological Society and the American Chemical Society, and is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Association for Aerosol Research.

He was Senior Chemist at three of the DOE National Labs (Brookhaven, Los Alamos, and Argonne) for over 30 years before recently joining the Chemistry Dept. at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as Chair and Professor of Chemistry in July of 2006.

He is also the Chief Scientist for the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research's Global Change Education Program (GCEP) -- see http://www.atmos.anl.gov/GCEP/ for more on that.

Jeff is very interested in the history of atmospheric chemistry, particularly the history of air pollution and its studies. He has written a number of papers that have been presented at the American Meteorological Society and American Chemical Society National meetings. The question of how we are influenced by our academic forefathers has been addressed in two chemical genealogies he has written looking at the mentors of James N. Pitts, Jr. and Professor Roger Atkinson of the Univ. of Calif., Riverside and examining the interests of the past thesis advisors in the areas of the air around them and environmental issues. He also teaches course in History of Chemistry at UALR. See references below:

He has written an Encyclopedia entry for UNESCO on smog formation and its effects and completed a mini-review on atmospheric chemistry for the new electronic journal Then Scientific World. He has authored over 180 papers in environmental chemistry, radiochemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, etc. He has also given over 400 professional talks on a variety of subjects and is active in the Chemistry and Public Affairs Committee of the American Chemical Society.

Jeff's brother was a history major at UC Riverside, which may explain his current interests in atmospheric history. In his spare time, he and his wife, Dr. Nancy Marley (she is colleague and co-researcher with Jeff for over 20 years and they recently edited book on the Impacts of Urban Aerosols: Lessons Learned from the World Trade Center Tragedy) spend time with their pet parrots, cockatoo, macaws, etc. training them to say new words and do new tricks. They also have bred parrots in the past but are currently trying to get over their birdaholic tendencies!

Jeff just completed doing interviews of Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland and Dr. James N. Pitts, Jr. at the University of California, Irvine for the American Meteorological Society Tape Recorded Interview Project (TRIP) as part of his activities as a member of the History Committee of the American Meteorological Society.
