Bibliography Editor Invites Contributions

Brant Vogel Writes,

"I am now completing my bibliography of recent secondary literature in the history of meteorology. Much of what I have gathered depends on my trust in the skills of library catalogers. However, I still find that the output of library searches requires a certain amount of vetting. And although I am comfortable enough with the various Western European languages which comprise much of the bibliography, I lack the competence to double-check things published in other language areas, including a great number of titles in East Asian and Slavic language areas. I am appealing for volunteers to look down some lists of titles to check for items that obviously do not fit into a bibliography of history of meteorology. This bibliography is of secondary sources, which may include primary sources that also some sort of commentary, introductory matter, or bibliographic notes which cross the line into secondary literature. Here is a rough count of what I have:

Language Entries

  • Chinese 80
  • Japanese 40
  • Russian 23
  • Czech 10
  • Polish 5
  • Korean 9
  • Arabic 2

I propose to send out lists to volunteers who just need to look at the titles, and tell me which should be cut. I don?t want translations, annotations, or any concerted effort. Instead, do what I do with the English titles: cut the ones which are very obviously inappropriate. I am cutting primary sources, undigested data sets, juvenile literature, fiction, and popularizations of the less useful variety. All rather subjective, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

This work is for publication, in one form or another, and all volunteers will be duly acknowledged as contributors. A line on the CV if you need it, and my sincere gratitude regardless.

Thank you,
